verse编辑部:请介绍一下TEMP建筑设计事务所,成立的初衷和现状及未来发展方向。

 

金智虎The prefix “TEMP” pertains to words that are associated with time, such as contemporary, tempo, and temporize. Architecture, inherently linked to space, cannot be separated from the dimension of time. It breathes life into space, because time moves forward everything changes. Sunlight, entering a space at changing angles and intensities, generates diverse atmospheres and emotions over time. Buildings evolve and weather with the passing of time. Our focus is on investigating this relationship to push the potential of architecture.

“TEMP”是与“时间”相关的前缀词汇,比如contemporary、tempo或temporize。建筑与空间本质上紧密相连,无法脱离时间的维度。它为空间注入生命,因为时间不断前进,一切都在变化。阳光以不同的角度和强度进入空间,随着时间的推移产生多样的氛围和情感。建筑随着时间的推移演变和风化。我们着重探讨这种关系,以挖掘建筑的潜力。

verse编辑部:您秉持的设计理念是什么?

金智虎:Design centers on people and the convergence of groups involved in the processes of planning, conceptualizing, constructing, inhabiting, and experiencing spaces that we design. This encompasses those who may be affected by the spaces, including also the ones responsible for destroying the spaces. The initiation and culmination of the design process hinge on a heightened perceptual awareness aimed at comprehending both who we are and the identities of others. Genuine curiosity serves as a catalyst for a deeper understanding of others, propelling the formulation of core questions that constitute the building blocks of a design initiative. The philosophy of design resides in the approach taken to address and resolve the posed questions.

设计聚焦于人以及参与规划、设计、建设、居住和体验我们所设计的空间过程的群体的交汇。这包括可能受到空间影响的人,也包括负责拆除空间的人。设计过程的发起和完成依赖于对加强感知意识的理解,旨在理解我们自己以及其他人的本质。真正的好奇心充当了深入了解他人的催化剂,推动了构建设计计划的核心问题的制定。设计的哲学在于针对问题提出的解决方法及方案。

verse编辑部:如果让您推荐贵事务所的两个代表作品,您会推荐哪两个?请详细谈一谈。

 

金智虎:When designing the X Museum, our aim was to challenge the nature of an art space that undergoes constant transformations due to ever-changing exhibitions and events. Our process began by addressing the most fundamental questions exploring the methods for installing and uninstalling artworks. It organically led us to develop a wall system using custom-made bricks with slots and hanging clips which allowed for exhibiting artworks without damaging the existing walls. The overall design of the space emerged from this approach to art installation.

在设计X美术馆时,我们的目标是挑战艺术空间的本质,这种空间由于不断切换的展览和活动而经常发生变化。我们的设计过程始于解决最基本的问题,探索安装和拆除艺术品的方法。这自然地引导我们开发了一种墙体系统,使用带有槽口和吊夹的定制砖块,可以在不破坏现有墙体的情况下展示艺术品。整体空间设计正是从这种对艺术品的安装方法中产生的。

Soul Art Center, located in 798, Beijing, is another art space we completed last year. Housed within a bauhaus factory structure dating back to the 1950s, the existing space has large north-facing windows bringing in exceptional natural light. Our design process began with a focus on addressing how to effectively organize the ever-changing light within the area while respecting its existing structures. To pay homage to the original sawtooth ceiling from the 1950s, we designed the curving overheads which house all the mechanical equipments. The repetitive wave-like patterns, reminiscent of clouds, not only echo the architectural history but also offer glimpses of the shifting sky through skylights, allowing the hall to be bathed in ethereal natural light throughout the day.

颂艺术中心,位于北京798艺术区,是我们去年完成的另一个艺术空间。这个艺术中心位于一座上世纪50年代的包豪斯工厂结构内,原有空间有朝北的大窗户,带来极好的自然光。我们的设计过程始于专注于如何在尊重现有结构的同时,有效组织区域内不断变化的光。为了致敬1950年代原有的锯齿状天花板,我们设计了弯曲的顶棚,容纳了所有的机械设备。这些重复的波浪图案,让人联想到云朵,不仅回应了建筑历史,还通过天窗提供了对流动天空的一瞥,使大厅在整个一天中都沐浴在空灵的自然光中。

verse编辑部:您的设计实践不仅限于建筑,亦包括室内和景观,还涵盖一体化设计。面对不同类型的项目,您着手设计的时候,其切入点是否有不同的地方?比如建筑和室内的项目的差异有哪些?

 

金智虎:The design of landscape, interior, and architecture cannot be separated by a clear line as they form interdependent relationships. They intricately contribute to a cohesive and continuous environment. Beyond the physical boundaries of a structure, architecture is contextualized through the surrounding environment. It is always in dialogue with the natural elements that constantly change. This then extends into the interior space through different thresholds as doors, windows, and so on. I think we can further extend the idea to the design of objects and furniture as well. In different scales, they are all connected and in conversation with each other to form a holistic atmosphere.

景观、室内和建筑的设计不能通过清晰的界线分开,因为它们形成相互依存的关系。它们精巧地为一个连贯而持续的环境做出贡献。在结构的物理边界之外,建筑通过周围环境来进行情境化。它始终与不断变化的自然元素进行对话,并通过不同的门、窗等门槛,延伸到室内空间。在我看来,我们还可以进一步将这个想法扩展到物体和家具的设计。在不同的尺度上,它们都相互连接和相互对话,形成一个整体的氛围。

verse编辑部:在过往的实践中,您遇到过的最大挑战是什么?

 

金智虎:Every project, from its inception to completion, is as a series of challenges to overcome. One of my basic belief in design is persistence. Our endeavors will invariably push and test your endurance to the point of giving up. Throughout the challenges, we must navigate rejections and confront situations that extend beyond the boundaries of control. I believe our work is meaningful because behind the outer surface the traces of the struggles we’ve faced is evident. My hope is that these traces serve as a reminder that discovering beauty in life is intricately linked to having both patience and tenacity.

每个项目,从开始到完成,都需要克服一系列的挑战。我在设计中的基本信念之一是坚持不懈。我们的努力无疑会推动并测试你的耐力,甚至到了放弃的边缘。在面临挑战的过程中,我们必须应对拒绝和超出控制范围的情况。我相信我们的工作有意义,因为在外表之下,我们所面对的挣扎痕迹是显而易见的。我希望这些痕迹能够提醒我们,发现生活中的美与耐心和坚韧都是紧密相连的。

verse编辑部:对您影响最大的建筑师或者设计师是哪位?

 

金智虎:There are too many buildings and designers have shaped my thought processes especially in this digital age where we are flooded with information every milli-second. Notably, Sanda Iliescu, a professor at my college (University of Virginia), has had the most significant influence on my thinking. She consistently emphasized the importance of discerning unseen aesthetic and ethical values in seemingly ordinary and overlooked elements. Her deep care for others and genuine approach to life left a profound impact on me. Through both her lifestyle and teaching methods, she conveyed the message that effective design is fundamentally connected to possessing a righteous and conscientious disposition.

有太多的建筑和设计师塑造了我的思考过程,特别是在这个数字时代,我们每一刻都被信息淹没。值得一提的是,我学院(弗吉尼亚大学)的教授Sanda Iliescu对我的思维产生了最显著的影响。她一直强调,在看似普通和被忽视的元素中,识别看不见的美学和伦理价值的重要性。她对他人的深切关怀和对生活的真诚态度对我产生了深远的影响。通过她的生活方式和教学方法,她传达了这样一个信息,即有效的设计基本上与拥有正直和良心的性格相连接。

金智虎:Engaging in exhibitions or creating installations within provides us with a distinct opportunities to experiment with ideas that may be challenging to explore in real projects due to practical constraints. It allow us to push the boundaries and delve into unconventional concepts without being constrained by practical considerations inherent in real-world projects, including regulations, budget constraints, client preferences, or site-specific challenges. These ideas that we test in exhibitions later come back and enrich our works.

参与展览或在其中创作装置,为我们提供了独特的机会,得以尝试在实际项目中可能由于现实约束而难以探索的想法。这使我们能够突破边界,深入探讨非传统的概念,而不受实际项目中固有的现实的考虑限制,包括法规、预算限制、客户偏好或特定场地的挑战。我们在展览中测试的这些想法,随后都回归了,让我们的作品变得更加丰富。

verse编辑部:您在韩国国立艺术大学任教数载,参与学生们的教学工作,对此,您有哪些感受?

 

金智虎:Teaching students is like looking in a mirror that helps you see yourself better. As a teacher, when you share your experiences and knowledge, it's not just a one-way street. You learn about yourself through the experiences of guiding students. The studio becomes a place of mutual growth, where both students and teachers evolve. Design courses focus on creative and critical thinking. It is important to encourage the students to think outside the box. I believe I learned more from the students than them from me.

教学就像照镜子一样,能帮助你更清晰地认识自己。作为一名教师,当你分享自己的经验和知识时,这并不是单向行驶的街道。通过引导学生的经历,你会更深刻地了解自己。工作室成为一个共同成长的地方,学生和教师都在不断发展。设计课程注重培养创造性和批判性思维。鼓励学生打破思维定势是很重要的。我相信我从学生那里学到的,比我教给他们的还要多。

verse编辑部:对于在校学子们及刚毕业几年的年轻设计师,您有哪些想说的话?

 

金智虎:I always will think of myself as a young architect  as we are all perpetually evolving architects. As a designer, the journey of learning and growth has no end. The following are a few insights I’ve gathered from my years of study and practical experience: understanding people before understanding space, having your own perspective to see the world, having persistence and resilience against the unforeseeable changes, embracing a sense of responsibility, and fostering curiosity to explore the uncharted realms.

我一直视自己为年轻的建筑师,因为我们都是不断蜕变的建筑师。作为设计师,学习和成长的旅程没有终点。我从多年学习和实践的经验中习得了一些见解:在理解空间之前先理解人,形成自己看待世界的视角,面对不可预见的变化要坚持不懈并拥有韧性,拥抱责任感,培养探索未知领域的好奇心。

verse编辑部:作为第四届WCM世界校园大师的评委,您对于此次大赛的希望和期待是什么?

 

金智虎:As one of the judges for this competition, my hope is to discover projects that aren't afraid to ask the challenging questions and then solve them in uncommon ways. I'm excited to see designs that challenge the norm and spark new ideas. I anticipate finding entries that not only meet the basic criteria but go above and beyond, inspiring us to think differently and offering valuable lessons through their unique approaches.

作为此次大赛的评委之一,我希望发现不惧提出挑战性的问题,并以非常规方式解决它们的项目。我期待看到挑战常规、激发新想法的设计。我还期待大赛涌现出不仅符合基本标准且大大超越期望的作品,它们以独特的设计手法激发我们另类思考,让我们获得有价值的经验。
