Spanning 645 sq-m, the multi-functional venue occupies the ground-floor corner unit of the Nordelec building. Anchored by the site’s 20th century bones – exposed concrete floors, raw brick walls and structural steel – the design contrasts rugged textures with contemporary interventions. Guests step into the double-height retail space through a dedicated entrance, heading past a sleek reception counter before ascending integrated concrete stairs into a series of interconnected zones: seven private golf simulator lounges designed as cozy living rooms and a vibrant restaurant and bar.  

Accents of putting-green tones, deep forest greens and rich burgundy punctuate the grey and brick backdrop, while playful nods to classic golf aesthetics – checkerboard ceilings, wavy grass-inspired carpeting and striped seating – energize the heritage setting. Exposed industrial elements juxtapose retro dining banquette seating, curved walls and sleek chrome touches that indicate the venue’s cutting-edge technology. A curated lighting scheme comprising fabric cylinder fixtures, custom steel sconces and golf-flag-inspired pendants enhances the immersive ambiance, casting a continuous glow. TV screens dotted throughout provide a constant stream of golf footage.

‘Golf is going through a transition’, wrote FRAME’s editor in chief Floor Kuitert in 2023, observing how store and club interiors were evolving to appeal to a younger, more diverse demographic. In Canada, recreational golf continues to grow, driven by a noted rise in programmes for women and adolescents. Ivy Studio Inc.’s design for Muni reflects this shift: eschewing the country club aesthetic in favour of a quirky fusion of new and old, it marks a conscious break from outdated precedents. 

By merging hospitality, retail and technology, Muni reframes the golf club typology for a new generation. The open and vibrant interior is deliberately inclusive, with warm furnishings and coloured zoning. This spatial language signals belonging and community, not hierarchy – a welcome departure from the clubhouse of old. The result is social, multi-functional and radically more approachable – a model for how sports environments can evolve to invite rather than intimidate. Nevertheless, it doesn’t erase the past entirely: nods to history through vintage golf photography and the building’s industrial shell ground the project in its context, showing that innovation can coexist with tradition.
