A retrofit re-use project to redefine and rejuvenate the historic Grade II Listed building, terraced roof gardens and ground-level landscape for a contemporary office environment, with design principles founded on the original vision for the gardens.

To be informal, elaborate, romantic, overflowing, and tumbling.

Plant (formerly Mountbatten House, originally Gateway House) is situated in central Basingstoke. 

Peter Foggo of Arup Associates’ Group 2 designed the building, and the noted landscape designer and horticulturist James Russell designed the gardens. 

The project was originally completed in 1976, and the terraced landscape gardens are the first example of their kind ever built in the UK.

The building and landscape became Grade II Listed in 2015 for their unique design and terraced, cascading roof gardens. It is regularly cited as one of the UK's 15 most important modern listed buildings.

The iconic building and landscape have been revived to become a gold-standard modern office space, achieving top-grade BREEAM Outstanding and International WELL Building Institute Platinum certifications.

The proposals for the site honour James Russell’s original vision for the gardens, that they are informal, elaborate, romantic, overflowing and tumbling. Whilst ensuring that garden spaces become more inclusive and replacement planting is suited to current and anticipated climatic conditions.

The landscape proposals exceed a 10% Biodiversity Net Gain requirement.

86 new trees and over 22,500 new plants have been planted.

Construction completed in September 2024.
