The Bidi Bidi refugee settlement in Yumbe, Uganda, is home to over 250,000 South Sudanese refugees, making it one of the largest resettlement areas in Africa. It is a unique case in urban development: each family is allotted a residential plot, where traditional wattle and daub houses are constructed. Surrounding these residential areas are multiple villages that include essential infrastructure, like hospitals and markets.

In 2022 a Performing Arts Centre was constructed in an effort to encourage creativity and expression. We partnered with Localworks to design the surrounding landscape of the Centre. Social gathering and food security were of main concern: a food forest highlighting the importance of crop diversity in semi-arid conditions was built, as well as gathering benches under trees and stormwater capture systems.
