Spanning the 47th and 48th floors of the New York Marriott Marquis hotel in Times Square, The View has remained New York City’s only rotating restaurant since its debut in 1985.

Leading the renovation and redesign of the dining icon under restaurateur Danny Meyer, Rockwell Group sought to revive the restaurant’s legacy as a crown jewel of Manhattan, drawing inspiration from the surrounding Theater District and our own understanding of scenic design to treat the space as a stage for the city’s most spectacular show.

The View’s steady 360-degree rotation drives the design of the space. Plush fabrics and drapery help define the circular floors and add dimension throughout. A series of overlapping concentric circles on the ceiling, inspired by the humming choreography of the streets below, creates everchanging points of reference as the restaurant makes its hourly revolutions.

On both floors, custom screens and wall coverings were designed in collaboration with members of American Theatre Wing, depicting illustrations of the city’s vast array of theaters, from historic Broadway playhouses to burgeoning community theaters.

A curved portal entryway on the third floor of the hotel leads to a set of glass bubble elevators, providing guests with a full view of the hotel’s atrium as they’re whisked to the bar and lounge on the 48th floor.

Weighty blue velvet drapes, evoking the classic stage curtains of a grand theater, open to the bar and lounge, where guests enjoy drinks and small plates around the room’s centerpiece: a towering curved cocktail bar.

A winding staircase cloaked in scarlet red carpet leads down to the main dining room on the 47th floor, where a wall of antique mirrors reflects the skyline, surrounding guests with dynamic views that continually shift as they dine.
