The architectural design for the renovation and expansion of the new building, and its underground connection to the main MASP (Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand) building, is a joint effort by METRO Arquitetos and NEVES Arquitetos. The plan proposed the partial demolition of the existing concrete structure and the construction of a new structure beneath Avenida Paulista, enabling full functional integration of the entire complex—both in technical operations and public access. The construction increased the museum’s total area by over 7,000 square meters, adding gallery floors, classrooms, technical storage facilities, a restoration laboratory, a restaurant, a shop, and event spaces, thus expanding its visitor capacity and the scope of activities currently offered.

The building takes the form of a regular rectangular prism, with a transparent ground floor open to the public. The facades are clad in perforated metal panels, which regulate the lighting and temperature conditions required for art exhibition. The project incorporates the most advanced technologies available for museum climate control, lighting, and security systems. The selected materials—exposed concrete, steel, glass, and stone—paired with prefabricated construction systems, create spaces that meet contemporary museological standards. They also reference the material palette of the historic MASP building, ensuring architectural coherence across the entire complex.

Visitors can access the museum via two entrances: Rua Professor Otávio Mendes, which houses the ticket office and museum shop; and Avenida Paulista, where the public can access the on-site restaurant and café. The first floor features a multifunctional area, including an indoor space designed for exhibitions and events, as well as a terrace with views of the Lina Bo Bardi Building. Dedicated exhibition spaces span five floors, each with a ceiling height of approximately five meters. These are spacious, flexible areas that can be easily adapted to suit the requirements of each exhibition. Rounding out the facility’s program are: a full floor dedicated to the conservation and restoration laboratory; a floor housing the classrooms of the MASP School; and a top-floor multipurpose space equipped to host exhibitions, events, and live performances.
