The architectural concept we propose for the library aims to distribute spaces for gathering and socializing across all floors, so as to activate and enliven every level of the building. On each floor—both in the existing structure and its extension—a new interface connecting the collections and the city is created. The library experience thus becomes a rich journey alternating between outward engagement and inward reflection.

Nestled in the heart of a district brimming with cultural and economic vitality, the Gabrielle-Roy Library is shaped by a multitude of influences that fuel and inspire its development. Among the defining features of this neighborhood, social diversity and inclusivity play a pivotal role and shape the identity of Saint-Roch on multiple levels. It is within this dynamic context that the BGR takes root and draws the energy essential for its growth.

Accordingly, the library’s relationship with the city forms the cornerstone of the project. This public-focused approach to the institution establishes Saint-Roch as the BGR’s primary anchor. This core connection is strengthened by significant urban and architectural interventions that will benefit both the institution and the surrounding community. On the ground floor, a generous plaza endows the library with an unmistakably urban character. Furthermore, the physical and visual continuity established with the adjacent public square multiplies opportunities for interaction and activation between the library and its neighborhood. Together, the BGR plaza and the public square form a vibrant urban hub punctuated by diverse elements and events (furniture, gardens, collections, workshops, etc.). This lively, well-utilized space thus serves as a bridge uniting the library with the public realm.

On the ground floor, the youth, civic engagement, and culinary hubs transform into a true indoor public square. On Floors 2 and 4—home to themed collection zones and activity spaces—a translucent envelope of screen-printed glass fosters an environment conducive to learning and concentration. On Floor 3, creative and exhibition spaces form a second public layer that opens onto the city. Finally, a series of tiered terraces spanning Floors 4 and 5 extend and enrich this urban dynamism all the way up to the rooftop.
