Every great design begins with the story of a space. Design, in itself, is a very complex term to comprehend since it encompasses a versatile range of ideas and learnings, and cannot be characterized by definitive or distinct specifications. This is the very crux of Art Rickshaw which seeks to represent design, in its various iterations, as a culture and art beyond its ethnicity, by redefining ideas that are quintessentially “Indian” with a simple combination of components and colours to create an imaginative space.

At Art Rickshaw, the whole concept of an art gallery is explored in a new narrative by not limiting ourselves in creating an exhibition space but rather, a place for learning, discovering, inducing, and provoking. Rather than making a volume of displayed items, it is an interactive workshop space where artists (of any and all forms of art), admirers, enthusiasts and those in the general public who are interested, can come together to set out on journeys of creative rediscovery.

The architecture, here, only provides a backdrop on which innovative practices may be executed. The objective is to create a surreal environment, on entering which, one can detach from their painfully monotonous and rational daily routines, and set foot on this “imaginatively magical Promethean Island”.

Different hierarchies of spaces are crafted with diverse sizes of undulating islands and strong colours to inspire artists and children alike, with the aim of embodying the immense potential of the enjoyment of imagination.

The brief given by the client, who is a young art entrepreneur, was to morph an older building located in a heritage neighborhood of Kolkata into a café cum art store to harbor creative minds and inspire them.

The original structure has been enhanced with unfamiliar arches, breaking the pattern of colonial reminiscence. Although the use of arches dates back to somewhat rustic times, it is the new form on an old template which bridges the gap between historic and contemporary. The design is a juxtaposition of traditional and novel design styles to create a balance with the use of modern elements in a fluidic manner to create a dynamic space.

In some places, the walls “flow down” and assume the floor or become display shelves or niches in the wall, further animating an otherwise still space.

Arched openings present a visual contrast and optical illusions through the play of light and shadow. The vibrant colours and bold forms are not merely a manifestation of an architect’s imagination but a strike of perfect symmetry between function and form with the help of modernity and praxis. The result is a space that invokes “food” for thought, mental exploration and a physical resting ground while soaking in the surrounding artistic resources.

The conventionally unassuming façade is made visible by a canvas of ornate intricacies achieved by employing daily household objects.

The entrance is flanked by a minimal white washed wall, while the visually superfluous flooring makes the space dramatic, with whimsical patterns in ceramic tile. The variation of fluidic floors and billowing island-like structures elevates the interplay between user and space, not only enhancing the functionality of the design but launching a typology of a “utilitarian playground”.
