The name ‘Squama’ evokes an allusion to overlapping layers of plates that reflect light in intricate patterns.
The Squama is part of the Kerf Collection, a series that explores the interplay of technique and material properties, treating the body as context. Through precise kerf cuts, the silver gains fluidity, bending effortlessly to follow the body’s natural topography.
Its undulating surface catches and disperses light, creating a luminous gradient that shifts with movement. The interplay of incandescent highlights and satin-finished shadows accentuates the body’s form, transforming reflection into a dynamic expression of light. These reflective effects keep the piece alive, almost like a living creature. The name ‘Squama’ evokes an allusion to overlapping layers of plates that reflect light in intricate patterns.
The flattened and opened state of the bracelet and necklace pieces, after being bent, reveals a variety of curved geometries. The smoother curves with narrower gaps gradually give way to sharper angles, creating exposed edges that form voids and wider spaces. This results in a more open design that evokes a sense of freedom. These voids and gaps allow the skin beneath to show through, making the contours of the skin visible against the background.
The rectangular edges of the flattened state transform into dynamic three-dimensional forms. Reflections on the surface exhibit vibrant color changes, influenced by the movements of the wrist and neck, as well as varying lighting conditions, which affect the overall mood and ambiance of the space. These reflective effects keep each piece alive, almost like a living creature.
In the necklace piece, as it adjusts to the diameter of the neck, its reflection is similarly affected, displaying a longer gradient spectrum based on its context.
The cutting technique allows the pieces to grow; for instance, the bracelet can extend from the wrist to the elbow, tailored to individual taste. The curvature of the design changes along the length of the hand, and the cuts reveal themselves as they take shape around the hand. These gaps and voids, influenced by the curvature, create a continuous spectrum.
