With a fondness of slapstick humour as portrayed by characters like Charlie Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy, Richard Hutten imagines the contemporary world which adds a sense of whimsy.
His expertise across furniture, products, interior design and art direction have made him one of the most collectible living designers with his works held permanently in over 50 museums.
Playing With Tradition: A Collaboration Where Traditional Carpets Are Reimagined For Today
Known for his vibrant personality and a commitment to sustainability, his latest collection- Playing with Tradition, a series of hand-knotted rugs in collaboration with Jaipur Rugs pushes the boundaries of modern design. A homage to traditional rugs, Hutten with his playful side brings “add-ons” on these rugs, offering a contemporary twist where all nine rugs in the collection are revitalised to make them relevant for today and the future generations, assuring that the traditional artistry changes with the changing times.

His subtle satire and humour is a take on the obsoleteness of anything in life whether it is interior design or as simple as handcrafted carpets. The designer’s unique perspective piques your interest as he honours traditional artistry while subtly mentioning through his designing expertise that we need to change the way we think and see the world around us and adapt as per changing times. He rightly puts it as “Traditionally design is about solving a problem. I don’t solve problems; I create possibilities” and open up a new world for us to view, in this case, the beauty of traditional rugs.
Traditional Artistry With A Contemporary Twist- Where Two Worlds Meet
The Playing with Tradition collection of designer rugs houses a total of nine carpets wherein a traditional rug from Jaipur Rugs is taken and given a new look with a whimsical twist done by the designer to make them the perfect conversational pieces for your home interiors.
The Confetti 1 & Confetti 2 are traditional rugs that take inspiration from the vibrant hues of the Holi festival in India, popularly also known as the festival of colours. The carpets here are imagined with colourful confetti thrown on them for that bright pop of colour, thus making them pieces of joy and celebration. Exuding optimism, the rugs definitely make everyday a party for your spaces.

Creating a symbiosis is the Squares rug showcasing bright and vivid square motifs, an ultimate symbol of modernism. Bringing together two contrasts has resulted in the beauty of this modern rug, standing true to playing with tradition.
The Color Blocks rug is a traditional carpet that showcases simple architectural blocks added on to create a contemporary architonic yet playful effect. Continuing the theme of geometry and symmetry contrasted to the traditional designs, is the Blue Box rug which takes inspiration from Dutch Delft Blue pottery and the rug takes its name as the rug and the box motifs are all designed in a blue colour, blending Holland and India, east and west.
Finally, designed in a subtle colour palette with the block motifs is the Perspective rug. An interesting design, the rug showcases a unique design wherein no matter which direction you look at the rug, your eyes are always drawn to the center.

Following his whim, Hutten brings Connect 1 & Connect 2, two rugs where he takes help of artificial intelligence and selects four traditional rugs randomly to join them with a thick needle and yarn from the centre. Such an ideation symbolises strength and power of togetherness. These pieces are definitely an ideal choice as wall art where the traditional use of rugs also pushes boundaries, becoming centres of conversations.
Concluding the collection is the Bananas rug, a vibrant piece which reminded the Dutch designer of the peel gags and the slapstick humour of comedians like Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy. Adding banana motifs on a traditional rug adds a touch of whimsy while being a reminder of the timeless humour created by the former artists.

In Conclusion
Ready to break norms and the set traditions, this colourful, vibrant and playful collection of designer rugs by Richard Hutten is a hard pass! While the designer closely worked with the skilled artisans of Jaipur Rugs, the collection is a proud launch at the Milan Design Week or Salone del Mobile 2025 for Jaipur Rugs.
Bringing his vision to life with an expertise that expands beyond norms and sectors, the Playing with Tradition is a collection that brings to your interiors the legacy and beauty of a 2500-year old craftsmanship and assures that each of these carpets remain relevant for today with a personal touch that brings out the best of both worlds.
